Bentonite Clay — Glossary
The swelling clay in clumping litter — it encapsulates liquid into scoopable clumps.
Sodium bentonite is a clay mineral that swells dramatically when wet — water slips between its molecular layers and the clay expands around it, forming a solid clump.
Clumping litter is bentonite doing exactly that — the urine is encapsulated for easy removal. The clay contains the liquid but does not neutralize its chemistry.
