Carpet Backing — Glossary
The underside layer of a rug or carpet — where moisture and accident residue collect beneath the pile.
The backing is the layer under a carpet’s pile — and it’s where liquid accidents end up after they soak through. Residue in the backing is out of reach of surface vacuuming, which is why a rug can smell after the top looks clean.
Treat the backing as well as the pile, or use washable rugs where a pet is prone to accidents.
