Sebum — Glossary

The skin oil pets deposit on the surfaces they lie on — a greasy, musty odor source.

Sebum is the oil a pet’s skin produces — it’s what gives a dog its characteristic musky smell. Pets deposit it constantly on the surfaces they rest on: beds, couches, carpets, car seats.

Sebum builds up gradually and is why a pet’s favorite spot smells most strongly — and why washable covers on those spots help so much.
