Olfactory Adaptation — Glossary

Nose-blindness — the brain tuning out a constant odor so you stop smelling what is still there.

When an odor is always present, your olfactory system stops flagging it — your brain files it as background and quits reporting it. You go nose-blind to your own home’s pet smell, even though it’s still there at full strength.

This is why a visitor smells what you can’t. Trust a guest’s reaction, or step outside and re-enter for a fresher read.
