HVAC circulation spreads odor — pulling room air through the system distributes the smell house-wide. A filter does not stop this; it removes the particles while moving the gas. The system is an odor distributor that happens to catch dander.

What actually helps the gas phase

Gas-phase removal needs different tools: activated carbon filters (adsorb some VOCs), ventilation (dilutes), and source treatment (stops emission). Some HVAC add-ons — carbon stages, UV — address parts of the problem.

The right filter choice

For a pet home, a mid-range MERV (8–11) balances particle capture with airflow — higher MERV restricts airflow in systems not designed for it. The filter handles the dander; handle the smell separately.
