The over-wetting risk
Incomplete extraction leaves the carpet wet — the unrecovered solution sits in the pile and padding, taking long to dry. Over-wetting causes its own problems: extended drying, wick-back (soil wicking up as it dries), and moisture that reactivates deposits.
A poorly extracted carpet can smell worse — the trapped moisture reactivates the reservoir.
The wick-back problem
As the carpet dries, moisture wicks upward — carrying dissolved soil from below back to the surface. The “reappearing stain” is wick-back: the deep residue migrating up as it dries. Extraction without addressing the deep deposit leaves this migration source.
Extraction vs. enzymatic for urine
For urine odor specifically, extraction alone is insufficient — it flushes the pile’s water-soluble fraction but not the padding’s crystal deposit. The effective combination is enzymatic treatment of the deposit followed by extraction of the residue.
