Polyester carpets resist the water accident better but hold the oily odor — the dog-smell compounds rather than the urine water.

Olefin: the moisture resistor

Olefin (polypropylene) is extremely hydrophobic — it barely absorbs water at all, so liquid accidents sit on the surface longer rather than soaking the fiber. But it holds oils and can trap odor in its texture. It is common in basements and outdoor carpet.

Wool: the protein fiber

Wool is a protein fiber — keratin — with a complex scaly structure. It binds odor through both adsorption and its protein chemistry, and it absorbs significant moisture into the fiber core. Wool holds odor strongly but also releases it under the right treatment.

Wool is also sensitive — alkaline and enzyme treatments must be chosen carefully as wool itself is protein.

How fiber type changes treatment

Fiber determines what works: nylon responds to water-based and enzymatic treatment; polyester needs degreasing for oily odor; olefin resists water-based treatment; wool needs protein-safe chemistry. A treatment optimized for nylon can underperform on polyester or damage wool.

The pile structure factor

Beyond polymer, pile structure matters — loop vs. cut pile, density, height. Dense deep pile holds more material and more odor than low tight pile. The fiber chemistry sets the binding; the pile structure sets the capacity.
